Season 1 – Abstract: The Art of Design
They argued that art was essentially a spiritual activity; to create the individual's place in the world, not to organize life in a practical, materialistic sense. During that time, representatives of the Russian avant-garde collaborated with other Eastern European Constructivist artists, including Władysław Strzemiński, Katarzyna Kobro, and Henryk Stażewski. Employing imagery reminiscent of sails and materials evocative of transatlantic voyages, such as canvas and ropes, Ernesto Neto (find more here) crafts a series of installations encompassing the various dimensions of the space at MAAT (find more here).

Primarily utilizing chintz, a cost-effective cotton fabric prevalent in Brazil and often adorned with vibrant floral motifs, Neto intricately cuts and crochets the material’s strips with various collaborators’ assistance. This technique, honed over years in the artist’s studio in Rio de Janeiro known as atelienave, forms the basis of the sculpture, composed of interconnected cells. Guided by a freehand approach, the overall design of the work evolves through experimentation and adjustments facilitated by specialized software, ensuring both precision and adaptability to the unique characteristics of the space during installation. In recent years, alongside his artistic pursuits, Neto has delved into percussion. Throughout the exhibition, the sculpture, incorporating a series of instruments, will intermittently come to life through a musical program orchestrated by musicians and groups from diverse corners of the globe, with a particular focus on the rhythmic traditions of African and Asian diasporas. In line with the artist’s aspiration to craft a truly inclusive and varied experience, visitors to the exhibition can also engage with various drums sourced from different origins scattered throughout the installation.
Storyline
The book has 43 chapters, each one dedicated to a single artist, and their process of creating a single work. There are poets, painters, chefs, sand castle sculptors and crossword puzzle makers. Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art.

His work is about his life and the experiences he has faced, including disability and migration, neither of which he sees as negatives. In his art, Barrangi is also telling a story about himself and his lived experience, exploring themes of disability and migration.

Ian Spalter: Digital Product Design
Expressionist painters explored the bold use of paint surface, drawing distortions and exaggerations, and intense color. Expressionists produced emotionally charged paintings that were reactions to and perceptions of contemporary experience; and reactions to Impressionism and other more conservative directions of late 19th-century painting. The Expressionists drastically changed the emphasis on subject matter in favor of the portrayal of psychological states of being.

From May 2nd to October 7th, 2024, Brazilian contemporary artist Ernesto Neto unveils his most expansive exhibition in Portugal at the Museum of Art and Technology (MAAT), Lisbon. At the heart of the show lies an immersive installation, representing one of Neto’s largest sculptures to date. Drawing inspiration from the caravels that set sail for what would come to be known as the Americas, Neto intricately weaves together images of sails and materials such as canvas and ropes. A selection Neto’s woven works populate the space, imbuing the exhibition with a tapestry of history and symbolism. Curated by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, Nosso Barco Tambor Terra [Our Boat Drum Earth], the exhibition’s form emerges from months of meticulous dialogue with MAAT’s architectural space and the museum’s surroundings. Digital art, hard-edge painting, geometric abstraction, minimalism, lyrical abstraction, op art, abstract expressionism, color field painting, monochrome painting, assemblage, neo-Dada, shaped canvas painting, are a few directions relating to abstraction in the second half of the 20th century.
Each image is accompanied by a quote from Sillman, explaining what step that particular draft represented in her process. In one chapter, Moss speaks with Amy Sillman, an abstract painter who Moss admires for her unique use of color and shape. When Adam Moss gave up his job as editor-in-chief of New York Magazine five years ago, he started painting. Interestingly, the word passed from Latin into French with competing spellings as both abstract (closer to the Latin) and abstrait (which reflected the French form of abstrahere, abstraire), the spelling retained in modern French. Abstract art, non-figurative art, non-objective art, and non-representational art are all closely related terms.
Today, Frenchies are firmly back in the beauty zeitgeist — in fact, they’re leading it. His show is inspired by a residency in the University of Leeds’ special collections, and draws on sources that include Iranian calligraphy, Middle Eastern textiles and European scientific illustrations. The show tells a fantastical story of a girl called Lily who sails in a small boat from Anzali, a city on the Caspian Sea in northern Iran, to England. "They all have a compulsion, an obsession to make something. It gets into their system and they can't let go of it," Moss said, explaining that the vision or the final product is secondary to the process. Musician Rostam Batmanglij, pictured here performing in 2017, shared his songwriting process with Adam Moss.
Other examples include Lyrical Abstraction and the sensuous use of color seen in the work of painters as diverse as Robert Motherwell, Patrick Heron, Kenneth Noland, Sam Francis, Cy Twombly, Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, and Veronica Ruiz de Velasco. Abstract demonstrated that great design is all around us, even if we don’t notice it. The best designers often strive to be invisible, prizing simplicity and prioritizing function; through design thinking, their work has shaped, and continues to shape, our world.
